Dear Citizens of India,
On September 10, 2009, Flt. Lt. Manu Akhouri took off in his MiG-21 from the Air Force station, Bhisiana in Bathinda district in the afternoon for a routine training sortie. While flying over the village of Bhalaina, his plane developed a technical snag and caught fire, leaving him with the last resort to bail out and save his life.

He didn’t. Eyewitnesses say that the plane was steered away from populated areas by the pilot, saving villagers from the mishap. He then maneuvered his plane towards the fields for a crash landing. He still had time to bail out. At the same time a bus appeared on the Bathinda-Muktsar main road. Apparently to avert accident with the vehicle, the plane was seen to veer away, and Flt. Lt. Akhouri lost his battle with death at last, hitting a tree. The jet was blown to pieces. His body was found in the fields , with the unopened parachute lying beside him.
Flt. Lt. Manu Akhouri was the fifth to lose his life this year in a MiG- 21 mishap. He was one of the most skilled pilots of his batch, and was among the selected fighter pilots of IAF who were sent to UK to receive training for the soon to be acquired Hawk fighter jets.

He was 24 years old, with his whole life lying in front of him. His one decision could turn fate the other way round, and keep his dreams safe.

He chose to die doing his duty.

Mr. Manpreet Singh Badal, Finance Minister, Punjab has requested the Government of India that highest civilian awards like Padma Visbhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shree be conferred posthumously upon Flt. Lt. Akhouri, for showing exemplary courage in saving many lives and public property, and sacrificing his precious life serving the cause of humanity. He has also urged the Chief Minister of Punjab and the Chief secretary Punjab to consider Flt. Lt. Akhouri for State and other gallantry awards.

The indebted villagers of Bhalaina have decided to rename the school in their village after Flt. Lt. Manu Akhouri. There is a bus stand called Shaheed Manu Akhouri bus stand.

It is not certain whether he would get this award or not.. it is possible that like hundreds of other unsung heroes, his final act is forgotten with time. And the frequency with which the news of MiG-21 crashes appears, there is a great possibility that he turns into a mere number on the list.

This is what we can change. We should come together to honor the courage of a young boy, who put his duty first and died saving the lives of his fellow countrymen. Mr. Badal has made a sincere request to the Govt. of India to honor Flt. Lt. Akhouri, and with the example he has set, he is bound to get what he deserves. But what is more important is that he should be known among the people of his country as a martyr, not as just another curve in the statistics. He should be remembered by the masses as the hero who had the right values inculcated in him by his worthy parents, which led him to do what he did for his country. Be it wartime or peace, the true duty of a soldier is to defend his countrymen. And having done just that, Manu Akhouri deserves every bit of respect as deserved by bravehearts who make supreme sacrifices in the battlefield.

If you, as responsible citizens of this country, feel that you owe something to Flt. Lt. Manu Akhouri and many other bravehearts like him , please contribute just half a minute of your time to pay tribute to him.

Kindly leave a comment, supporting our cause, that Manu Akhouri must be honored for his valor. The more positive responses we get, the stronger becomes the belief that we are the ones who shall decide who our real heroes are. 1. The death of Flt. Lt. Manu Akhouri in Mig 21 air crash gives me the profoundest sorrow which one feels on the death of a young boy. But the kind of valour he showed for protecting the life below is exemplary and in keeping with the high traditions of Indian Air Force. He gave the supreme sacrifice to save the lives of the populace which would be destroyed if his Mig crashed on them.

One question however dogs me day and night why are we not grounding the Mig 21s which have already deceive many a bright young pilot already. Is the Indian beaurocratic system controlled by IAS officers delaying the purchase of alternative fighter crafts? I always believe the Secretary Defence should always be an armyman and not a man from IAS cadre whose knowledge of the forces and sympathy for the forces is always miserable. How long can we brook the security of the country and lives of our soldiers on the name of beaurocratic prcedures.

  2. I salute and pay my tributes to this great son of India. Its sad to see that we have lost so many of our brave soldiers in Mig-21 air Crash and defence ministry has done nothing to ensure these incidents don't take place in the future.

Most of the time the sacrifices being made by our soldiers goes un-noticed and that is why the younger generartion is not interested to join the Armed forces. What for? and the results is that today Indian Army is short of 11,500 officer and it could take 20 years to bridge officers shortage.

I think is high time for the Govt. to take note of the supreme sacrifice made by Flight Lt. Manu and should conferred gallentary award for showing courage at such a young age and also saving thousands of life.

  3. Indian pilots are not smart and talented individuals.Basically they are suicide bombers of government of India. It's a high time for our youth to maintain a distance from Indian Air Force, which recruits suicide bombers on lines of Taliban to fly outdated and obsolete planes like Mig, Mirage etc. Through Deepak Dobhal I came to know about this incident. Now few people are campaigning that he should be given a award for his exemplary services to the nation. But we need to understand he is not martyr at all. He was killed by government of India in a cold blooded manner. So, through the due process law of murder cases need to initiated against the President of India, who is a head of armed forces and Prime Minister, who is actual in-charge of this country. Finally they should be hanged. Believe me we are not asking for too much. Look at the security of Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, even that person named Vadra, lalu, Bhalu etc. Also take a look at the planes our pilots fly and equipments our forces use in battle grounds. Its a shame for all of us.

  4. flight lt.manu akhouri placed in exempelary example to us. he had an easier option to save his life and let others die.but he chose to die himself in order to save the lives many who were even not his aquinttence.a big salute to flt.lt.akhouri. he deserves the highest gallantry award of the land. secondly the migs which have become flying coffins should be replaced immidiately by the indian air force.

  5. Dear Mukesh,

Thanks for your support.I can understand your anguish and resentment against the system of these outdated machines that have cost us the lives of so many brave pilots. The pain of the loss of one such life is replaced by anger for the system that has, despite so many repeated incidents, has not been able to come up with a firm solution.
the inclusion of new indigenously built fighter jet Tejas is scheduled for 2010, but the present entanglements of the beaurocratic system indicate that it still has a long way to go.

Manu Akhouri was a victim of this outdated machine, and this highly skilled fighter pilot who could have used his exploits on the battleground, and done his country proud had to fight his battle with his own machine that betrayed him on that fateful day. What, however, is important to know, that in the end, what he did was what he would have done at the battlefield- he saved his people rather than saving himself.

we cannot, in our resentment, ignore his sacrifice. whenever we hear of a MiG crash, the first emotion that takes over is helplessness and anger against the system. And it is completely right. but let a week go by, and nobody remembers. The problem with the general mindset is that whatever is frequent, be it an incident as painful as the loss of a young pilot, is acceptable as the truth. We need to change that. And we need to acknowledge the fact that whatever have been the consequences, Flt. Lt. Akhouri gave it all.

We need our countrymen's support to get his bravery acknowledged. our stand against the flying of Mig-21s is firm, but things cannot change in a day. How many of us have remembered to write or comment about the outdated Mig-21s when there are no crashes?

The issue is not Mig 21 alone here. The greater issue is the sacrifice of Manu AKhouri which should be given honorable recognition by the Govt. of India.

I thank all those who have joined us in the effort. please extend your support so that Flt. Lt. Akhouri's story does not get lost.

  6. I am very proud of the fact that i had the opportunity to know this gentle yet awfully brave soul,Flt. Lt. Manu Akhouri, who showed exemplary courage in the last moments of his life not once thinking about his own safety and put the lives of others before him. He saved several families from the grief that his family and loved ones bear today.the void he has left behind can never be filled. he is deeply missed

I appeal to the government of india to acknowledge his bravery and sacrifice.
and also take cognizance of the fact that another precious life has been lost to the inefficient and old machine called the MIG 21 and it needs to be phased out faster.

I send my heart felt condolences to his family and loved ones.
May God give you the strength to bear the pain.

  7. firstly i feel utmost sad and still cant believe it that i am writing this for manu who was a very dear friend of mine right from his training days at bidar air force base....he was the most humble and a soft spoken chap i have come across at bidar....not to mention tht he was an exceptional professional which he has displayed why.....

last i met him was at bidar when he was buying a cooler from the market for his cabin.....nd then he left for uk training on hawks....

the point is tht i and a whole lot of well wishers in this country and all the countrymen have lost a soldier who has been a victim of stupid flying machine which hates to be phased out because of the simple reason that is no one...not even our commanders can do anything in front of the bureocratic higher echelons of our so very slow procurement system.....we in forces boast of our everything and end up saving people only coz of sheer courage and josh....you ask any senior officer....he will say mig 21 is an exceptional machine.....bull shit to them as when they flew it ...it was 30 yrs back.....we had our chief of air staff exclaiming the same thing on one of the national channels...a few days back.....now everyone knows how one becomes successful in our system...just by doin nothing for our country and making tall false claims.....

i wont sympathise with this young officer....but would rather keep him alive in my head always.....he deserves to be recognised at the highest forum.....

IT IS HIGH TIME OUR MEDIA TAKES UP THIS AND RAKES UP AN ISSUE OF SUCH MATTERS TO SOLVE THEM RATHER THAN RUNNING AFTER LAALOOS AND MAYAWATIS WHO DO A SHIT FOR THIS COUNTRY...

i still remember he once said to me.....sir, fighter aircraft is the safest aircraft as u can eject anytime it fails......now i respect him for his deed.....which dint deter him to make the supreme sacrifice i the face of duty....

condolences for the loved ones and very special frnds of mine bereaved in this sad accident....

  9. Flt. Lt. Manu's sacrifice deserves the highest mention and awards. He died saving lives, regretfully to lose his own in the process. It is the most deserving of sacrifice to die saving lives instead of taking lives.

It is a sad policy of the government to award those who die in "action" ( read war). I believe his sacrifice was no less than those who die during "action".

Awards or no awards, his sacrifice shall always be remembered by his friends, family and all conscient citizens, and he shall live in our hearts forever.

  10. I don't even know what to write. Expressing my anguish and sadness here will not help the system improve, will not help the other pilots, brothers and friends of mine, or make their planes safer.

What I only wish to do is to pay homage to a brave man, give my condolences to his family and say a prayer to keep all the others flying everyday safe.

Nothing we say will change anything, the government is not interested, the media does not have any scoop in this and the people do not care who dies as long as they are safe. Only the declaration of martial law can change things in favour of the armed forces. But being proponents of the democratic way of life, that is not a viable option.

The only other way is to make military services compulsory for everyone for two years atleast. It is only when the decision makers feel that one of their loved ones is climbing into a sub-standard plane, facing up to terrorists without adequate protection, will they do something about it.

Sadly, the very democracy we love will ensure that this doesn't happen. 80% of the people are selfish and scared and will ensre that such a law is never passed. Majority, as always, will win.

I feel proud to be under such a brave yet gentle person during my stay at the NDA.one of the finest pilots and person one could come across.the supreme sacrifice made by him must not go unnoticed.agreed tht we in the air force fly aircrafts tht are old,but it is not the machine but the man behind it who makes all the difference.the decision taken by sir is the most difficult, one could come across.he has taken a step where most of us would get jelly legs. This according to me is wht the ethos of services are.the sacrifice made by sir must not go unnoticed.i urge everyone to join hands in supporting this noble cause.i sincerely hope tht the govt pays proper tribute to sir.

  14. How you play with us, did you ever see?
    At Seven, I had decided what I wanted to be;
I would serve you to the end,
All these boundaries I would defend.
Now you make me look like a fool,
    When at Seventeen and just out of school;
Went to the place where they made ‘men out of boys’
    Lived a tough life …sacrificed a few joys…
In those days, I would see my ‘civilian’ friends,
    Living a life with the fashion trends;
Enjoying their so called ‘College Days’
While I sweated and bled in the sun and haze…
But I never thought twice about what where or why
All I knew was when the time came, I’d be ready to do or die.
At 21 and with my commission in hand,
Under the glory of the parade and the band,
I took the oath to protect you over land, air or sea,
And make the supreme sacrifice when the need came to be.
I stood there with a sense of recognition,
But on that day I never had the premonition,
that when the time came to give me my due,
You’d just say,’ What is so great that you do?’
    Long back you promised a well to do life;
And when I’m away, take care of my wife.
You came and saw the hardships I live through,
And I saw you make a note or two,
    And I hoped you would realise the worth of me;
but now I know you’ll never be able to see,
Because you only see the glorified life of mine,
Did you see the place where death looms all the time?
Did you meet the man standing guard in the snow?
The name of his newborn he does not know…
Did you meet the man whose father breathed his last?
While the sailor patrolled our seas so vast?
You still know I’ll not be the one to raise my voice
I will stand tall and protect you in Punjab Himachal and Thois.
But that’s just me you have in the sun and rain,
    For now at Twenty Four, you make me think again;
    About the decision I made, Seven years back;
Should I have chosen another life, some other track?
Will I tell my son to follow my lead?
Will I tell my son, you’ll get all that you need?
This is the country you will serve
This country will give you all that you deserve?
I heard you tell the world ‘India is shining’
I told my men, that’s a reason for us to be smiling
This is the India you and I will defend!
But tell me how long will you be able to pretend?
You go on promise all that you may,
But it’s the souls of your own men you betray.
Did you read how some of our eminent citizens
Write about me and ridicule my very existence?
I ask you to please come and see what I do,
Come and have a look at what I go through
Live my life just for a day
Maybe you’ll have something else to say?
I will still risk my life without a sigh
To keep your flag flying high
but today I ask myself a question or two…
Oh India…. Why do I still serve you?

  20. Dear Manu - My father who is an Army officer says- "A true soldier never gives up,and he never dies". I believe you have achieved the ultimate goal of your life, you did what a true soldier would have done in that situation.I know you are there somewhere, staring and smiling.
No son, no brother, no friend could have made all of us so proud, the way you did.You are a true Indian - and because of you today I have another reason to be proud to be an Indian.Your sacrifise will not go waste- it is time for all of us to wake up and do something about it.

There has been more than 250 air crashes alone in last one decade, out of which 94 are MIG 21 as found from the different sources. There has been so many instances where our heroes have lost their lives and still there is no measures taken to prevent these accidents. It is not fair, nor it is justified. It is time to awake and join our hands to do
something for our heroes. We can not afford to loose more heroes.

Manu you are a true martyr, we salute you.
May your soul rest in peace.

  21. I salute and pay my tributes to this great son of India. Defence ministry should take firm steps to stop such unfortunate mishaps with our brave pilots. The sacrifices being made by our soldiers should not go un-noticed and it should be ensured that no more precious lives are lost because of non-caring civilians.

The Govt. must have an officer from the Armed Forces as Defence Secretary who'd understand the needs of the warfare much better. This would be the biggest recognition of the supreme sacrifice made by Flight Lt. Manu and many others like him.

  27. no words are enough. and none are too little. i first heard of an airforce officer crashing in one of these when i was 8. i was 14 when i decided that anyone who i ever heard of joining the IAF was one of the bravest suicidal fools i ever met. i shared it with whoever told me of their want-to-be-a-fighter-pilot ambitions. being a fauji kid myself, there've been plenty. i wondered how parents could accept such claims calmly. i was apalled at how people around me didnt see my rationale. i anguished that they'd never have to find out the hard way.. while thankfully none who i know personally have lost a loved one to the MIG, it does not make this situation any less sad. Nor does it diminish the respect for Flt Lt Akhouri's courage and valour any less. But until there is accountability, will justice ever be served?

  28. Mr. A.K Antony, Defence Minister....its for you....
"The IAF has the worst crash record on the planet. This is a world record. No other Air force has had the ignominious honor of so many crashes on non-battle conditions. The Indian press refers to the Mig 21 as the Flying Coffin, but they are all flying coffins or crematiion discs for the IAF pilots. There are have been more crashes of this aircraft than the entire airforces of more than half the world."
Wake up Govt. of India...just gaze at manu's picture and listen him, he is asking some questions...

1.why did my parents lose their son...

2.Why have sons of this country been flying in these flying coffins.

3.Why Death of every pilot caused by Mig is not pointedly overlooked for gallantry Awards...

    4. Could I be Back to my mama by those fake ministerial eloquence that has flooded after my death.

5.Who will act to stop the loss of young lives in the ancient aircraft of our Air Force

    6.When will it end?

Please ponder upon these questions and come up with valid answer...or Kindly submit your resignation and if cant do either..work hard..go for 18 hour hard studies..crack CDS..crack PABT.. join Indian Air Force and be a PILOT and have a MIG FLY...and if able to do so ..dont forget to salute your martry brave senior Flt. These planes have already taken so many young lives, we are not losing pilots we are losing IAF future. If these accident gets continue then no one would like to join forces. If they are taking care of our country then it is also our duty to care of our soldiers.
I request Indian government to consider the Braveness, Boldness and Intelligence of Flight Lt. Manu and honour him with the Highest Gallantry award.

  42. Bravehearts like Manu are precious and rare! In a world full of greed and selfishness, we had a son who sacrificed his life for "others". These "others" were the countrymen whom he never met but had vowed to protect.

For if the politicians cannot lead by example, put forward the Brave Sons of the soil from whom the country can draw inspiratrion.

Instead of causing national shame in the parliament by throwing mikes and chairs at each other, tell those young students in the schools about the selfless acts of bravery so that they can grow up to become one amongst the heroes and bring glory to the nation!

Long live Flt. Lt. Manu Akhouri.
May the country be blessed with more and more sons like you.

  45. I share my deep feelings with Akhouri family.
Its time Indian government take a decision not to train young and promising citizens on cheap, untested, unqualified MIGs.Awards and honours does not bring us back Manu Akhouri and other young pilots who sacrificed their lives. If the government still wants to continue using MIG-21s, then why not use those for official purpose and give high precision fighter jets for training young pilots?

  46. While saluting this chap's professionalism, courage and feeling for countrymen - we must learn one more lesson from here. Whoever joins IAF should know its an official suicide mission. Refrain from joining it - you cant do any good for country and you can't do anything bad for enemies. Rather you can get a chance to become a hero saving people from a mishap that mishap whould not exist without you (or others like you) flying the killing machine. So lesson learned is dont fly this killing machine it does not help us and does not harm enemies (thats too mocked up though). Joining IAF is a gamble for money. Neither you can fulfill your passion for flying an advanced machine nor you get a safe career. Refrain from joining it by remembering Manu's fate. Manu's martyrdom recognized by govt will not help anything - better we remember it ourselves. Martyrdom is inspiring - but inspiration should not be for joining a suicide squad. We btter remember him as a martyr and a victim of system both together.

  48. Its just not fair.....i am still wondering how many more would it take for the govt to realize that the Mig is something even the Wright brothers would not fly in!!!
Its a shame that the best in our country are leaving us because of stupidity and a lackluster attitude from the ones we voted in power.
It's high time someone does something about it. The life of innocent young men are being lost in a war which has not even been declared....its a war against callousness, carelessness and just plain uninterest.
My heart goes out to his family, his loved one and his closest friends. I am sorry for what happened. I can't even imagine what you all are going through. :(

He was a hero, a son, a brother and he meant the world to a close friend of mine. A true son of the soil.

  56. Yes, He should be getting these awards; and should be considered for the peace-time gallantry awards as well. Anyways, it's not Flight Lieutenant Manu Akhouri who would be honored rather such awards would be honored to have him as the recipient. But of course, we need to acknowledge, appreciate and adore the spirit of this brave-hearted man who lived for his countrymen and died for them as well.
Hail you Sir; may we develop such courage in ourselves, as well!

  57. CHANDEEP:-

    THE FINAL INSPECTION

The Soldier stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

    "Step forward now, you Soldier,
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My Church have you been true?"

    The Soldier squared his shoulders
and said, "No, my Lord, I ain't.
Because those of us who carry guns,
    Can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was tough.
    And sometimes I've been violent,
Because the world is awfully rough.

But, I never took a dollar,
    That wasn't mine to keep...
Though I worked a lot of overtime,
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
    And sometimes, God, forgive me,
    I've wept unmanly tears.

    I know I don't deserve a place,
    Among the people here.
    They never wanted me around,
    Except to calm their fears.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
    It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't, I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne,
Where the saints had often trod.
    As the Soldier waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

    "Step forward now, you Soldier,
    You've borne your burdens well.
    Walk peacefully on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in Hell."

they gave us all they had, all we can give is the love respect & the immortality of our memories and yet we shy away from it!!

It takes a lot of courage to put the safety and well being of a common man ahead of your own self. I salute the hero who did something which we cannot even imagine doing.
There is no way that we can acknowledge his contributions towards the country. Gallantry awards like Param Veer chakra are a way to help us realise the contribution of such unsung heros.

  59. I am sure that it will be impossible to fill a gap that heroes like Manu creates in true service of nation. However, the gallantry award is surely one of the ways in which we can remember them.
On the same note, I would like to raise another point why does it happens in India, the tools and technologies we are using is outdated. They are actually been dumped into our country from developed countries once their expected life is finished. Is it what India boasts of huge chunk of GDP been transferred to defence or probably in minister's pocket.

According to me, this is our mistake and we just cannot pass on the blame to Government. We are the people who are putting those politicians into force, we are the people who are creating no change in such a system, we are the people who forget such sacrifices. There is no point in blaming the system or the people. it is because of people like us who forget such incidents easily, some people in the government can relax and take advantage of the situation at lives of great citizens. PLEASE DO NOT MISLEAD PEOPLE BY SUCH EMOTIONLA AND DRAMATIC STORIES. IF ANYONE OF YOU WHO WROTE ANYTHING ABOUT THE INCIDENT AND THOSE WHO COMMENTED UPON THE INCIDENT KNEW A THING ABOUT FLYING OR AERODYNAMICS OF MIG 21 WOULD KNOW THE STORY CANNT BE TRUE. YES A LOT OF LIVES WERE SAVED BUT PLEASE UNDERSTAND ITS ONLY A RUMOUR. HE WAS A GOOD PILOT OTHERWISE HE WOULDNT HAVE BEEN IN INDIAN AIR FORCE BUT THEN ALL PILOTS MAKE MISTAKES AND HE WAS UNFORTUNATE TO HAVE COMMITTED THIS MISTAKE AT SUCH LESS HEIGHTS WHERE IT WAS PRACTICALLY AND THEORATICALLY IMMPOSSIBLE TO MANOEUVER, FORGET ABOUT RECOVERING THE AIR PLANE. I KNOW BY WRITING ALL THINS I AM OFFENDING A WHOLE LOT OF YOU BUT THEN MY DEAR FRIENDS THAT IS THE TRUTH. In a soldier you will find, sacrifice so that the world can be free.

In a soldier you will find no compromise and courage in his eyes....

Flt Lt. Manu Akhouri, a bright young officer, has accomplished more in his short life, than most people do living to a ripe old age and has lived more of a life than we will ever hope to.

I salute this soldier who has gone beyond the call of duty, I pray for his family to give them the strength to overcome this tragedy.

I salute Manu's bravery, and we all stand humbled by his action of putting others before his safety, of putting others families before his own. Brave Warrior, your battles are over, it's time to rest your head.
Brave Warrior, lay down in the clover, the earth is now your bed,
Brave Warrior, a flag is now wrapped around you, your grateful nation mourns.
Now rest in peace, and sleep for the ages in the place where you were born.

Brave Warrior, your time was short, now it's time to say goodbye.
Sweet Warrior, mount your faithful steed as you ride off in the sky,
A folded flag is all that's left to remind us, of how you lived and died,
Brave Warrior, they've all come to see you, they've come to say good bye.

When the poppies fate, and the cold winds blow,
and the graves are covered in the fallen snow,
you will warm our hearts with the memory of your love.

Brave Warrior, evening is falling, the fields are empty and gold,
Brave Warrior, your star shinning bright, your spirit of peace we now hold,
Brave Warrior, your ship finds its harbor, where the water meets the sky.
And I will think of you as I breath my freedom, with a tear drop in my eye.
Sweet Warrior, I'll never forget you, good soldiers never die.

    Your memory will never die.

Words are falling short to describe how I feel today thinking what went wrong this date exactly a year back.
